One Doctoral Program. A Community of Scholars.
Designed for educators, teacher educators and researchers, this doctoral program examines how teachers learn, grow and lead throughout their careers. You’ll engage in advanced coursework on teacher preparation, professional development, curriculum theory and educational equity while developing the research skills to address complex issues facing schools and communities.
The Doctoral Curriculum
Across 60 semester hours, the program combines rigorous coursework and original research to prepare you to study how teachers learn, grow and lead with a cohort-based model and opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.
A 60-Credit Curriculum
Montclair’s 60-credit PhD begins with 6 credits of proseminars on the central questions in teacher education and teacher development, followed by 12 credits of core courses on the design and implementation of pre-service teacher preparation, novice teacher induction and ongoing professional development.
With 18 credits of electives, you can deepen your understanding of specific areas in teacher education while working closely with distinguished faculty in a vibrant scholarly community.

Research & Dissertation
The program includes 12 credits of research courses, giving you the tools you need to be both a critical consumer and producer of research with training in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
You’ll complete 12 credits of dissertation research, designing and conducting original research that contributes to the knowledge base on teaching and learning and prepares you for careers in higher education, policy analysis, school leadership or research organizations.
