Learn more about Montclair State University's Alternate Route teacher-certification pathways for K–6 Elementary, P–12 Subject Area and P–3 Early Childhood Education. During this session, program representatives will explain how the routes differ, review eligibility and employment requirements, and discuss the process for earning standard New Jersey teacher certification.

Teacher Certification

Alternate Route K–6 Elementary

This 30-credit, two-year pathway allows candidates to complete their certification coursework while working as a lead teacher in a K–6 classroom.

Certification Area Elementary education, kindergarten through grade six

Requirements Certificate of Eligibility and qualifying teaching employment

Format 30 credits completed on campus over two years

Teacher Certification

Alternate Route P–12 Subject Area

This 24-credit, two-year pathway is designed for candidates teaching an approved subject area in a New Jersey public school while completing certification requirements.

Certification Area Approved subject-area instruction from preschool through grade 12

Requirements Certificate of Eligibility and employment in the subject area

Format 24 credits completed on campus over two years

Teacher Certification

Modified Alternate Route P–3

This 30-credit synchronous online pathway prepares candidates for P–3 certification and can be completed in two years alongside New Jersey's employer-based Provisional Teacher Program.

Certification Area Early childhood education, preschool through grade three

Admission A CE is not required for initial program admission

Format 30-credit synchronous online program completed in two years
